The Golf Administrators Outside Cardiff Golf Club

Whilst there have been, over the years, many members willing to play their part in the administration and running of their Club, not may have ventured forth to utilise their skill and expertise further afield i.e. County, National or International.

The exceptions are: -

Laurence Godfrey.jpg

Laurence’s introduction into golf administration commenced when he became a junior partner in the accountancy firm of W J Fooks - Bill himself had been the Honorary Secretary/Treasurer of Glamorgan County Golf Union for many years.

Laurence was elected to the committee of the County Union in 1964, aged 29. Two years later he himself became the Honorary Secretary/Treasurer, a role that he held until 1976. During his time as Hon Sec he had a hand in the formation of the Channel League, which transformed County golf matches from being far too friendly into a competitive league.

He took on the Secretaryship of the newly formed league, in addition to retaining the Treasurership of the Union, but in 1978 was installed as the Chairman of Glamorgan County Golf Union in its’ 50th Jubilee Year.

Andy, as he is better known, has been a six times Champion at Cardiff G.C. He was appointed Captain of the first Welsh Boys Team in 1972. In 1980, he became a member of the Welsh Golf Union’s Executive Committee and, in 1994, the Centenary Year of the Welsh Golfing Union, became its youngest President.

Following periods on the Championship and Executive Committees Andy became President of The European Golf Association in 2005 and followed that role by representing the European and African Zones on The World Amateur Golf Council. In 2012 he was appointed non playing Captain of the European Amateur Team successfully winning 3 consecutive biennial matches against The Asia Pacific Golf Confederation for the famous Bonallack Trophy.

Andy became a Council member and subsequently a Board Member of the Golf Union of Wales in 1989. He was non-playing Captain of the Welsh Boys team between 1996 and 1999. Non-playing Captaincy of the Men’s team followed, between 2000 and 2007 - in fact in 2002 it was the only time that Wales had won the Men’s Home Internationals.

Andrew was called upon to Captain the European Junior Ryder Cup team in Ohio in 2004, beating the USA on their own patch! (Rory McIlroy, Oliver Fisher and Carlotta Ciganda were in the team.) He was the invited to Captain the team at the next match at Celtic Manor in 2006 and successfully defended the Cup. ( Victor Dubuisson was in the European side while Tony Finau played for USA).

An invitation to become a Walker Cup selector followed in 2006 to 2010. The 2007  GB & I team had three Welshmen, while Danny Willett played and the USA team included Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler. In the next Walker Cup in 2009, Tommy Fleetwood was included.

Andy rejoined and became Chairman of the GB&I Walker Cup selection Committee from 2015 to 2019. The Walker Cup was won in 2015 under the Captaincy of Welshman Nigel Edwards (Whitchurch GC member!) at Royal Lytham & St.Annes

Andrew had the enormous honour to Captain the GB&I Walker Cup team in 2017 to play the USA in Los Angeles
